Your car’s transmission is one of its most crucial systems, quietly working behind the scenes to get you moving smoothly. At Weston Smash & Service Centre in Weston, we specialise in both automatic and manual transmission servicing and repair. Understanding the differences between these systems can help you spot issues early, extend your vehicle’s life, and save on costly repairs.

The transmission is the system that transfers power from your engine to the wheels. It controls how your car accelerates and handles, ensuring your engine runs efficiently. There are two main types:

Automatic Transmission (Auto): Uses a hydraulic system and computer controls to shift gears automatically.

Manual Transmission (Manual): Requires the driver to manually change gears using a clutch and gear lever.

Automatic: Gears shift automatically based on speed and engine load. Modern autos often include electronic sensors and transmission control modules (TCM) to optimise performance.

Manual: The driver engages the clutch to disconnect the engine from the gearbox, selects the desired gear, and releases the clutch to re-engage. This system is simpler mechanically but demands more from the driver.

Car “creeps” in gear when clutch is fully released

Ignoring these symptoms can lead to damage in other systems, such as the engine, drive shafts, or differential, increasing repair costs.

Smooth operation: Maintains comfortable and efficient driving.

Extended vehicle life: Reduces wear on gears, clutches, and internal components.

Preventative care: Early detection of leaks or worn parts saves money and stress.

Better fuel efficiency: A well-maintained transmission ensures optimal engine performance.

Did you know the first automatic transmission appeared in the 1940s and was considered a luxury feature? Today, most vehicles in Australia use autos, but manuals are still popular for performance cars, utes, and off-road vehicles.

Check and replace transmission fluid at recommended intervals.

Avoid “riding” the clutch in manual cars.

Be gentle with gear changes; avoid sudden aggressive shifts.

For autos, don’t ignore warning lights or unusual noises.

Consider regular inspections, especially if driving in hilly or harsh weather conditions common around Weston.

Shift Smart: Understanding Auto & Manual Transmission Servicing

Your vehicle is equipped with several different filters, each designed to function within a specific system in your car. At Weston Smash & Service Centre, we understand these systems thoroughly and provide expert servicing in Weston and the surrounding areas.

Put simply, filters work to trap particles that could cause damage or don’t belong in the system they’re protecting. However, all filters have a limited lifespan – once they become clogged with the particles they’re designed to capture, they must be replaced. Failing to replace filters when needed can lead to costly damage in critical parts of your vehicle.

Oil Filter: Ensures the engine oil remains clean and flows efficiently through the engine, preventing wear and tear.
Air Filter: Blocks dirt, debris, and particles from entering the engine that could harm cylinders, pistons and other internal components.
Cabin Air Filter: Protects the car’s ventilation system by filtering out pollen, dust, and bacteria, ensuring clean air inside the vehicle.
Fuel Filter: Prevents contaminants from reaching the carburettor or fuel injectors, helping maintain proper fuel flow and performance.
Transmission Filter: Found in vehicles with automatic transmissions, it removes debris and metal shavings from transmission fluid to protect the gearbox.

Did you know that a clean engine air filter can improve fuel efficiency by up to 10% in some vehicles? Ensuring all filters are in good condition not only safeguards your car’s systems but can also enhance its overall performance.

At Weston Smash & Service Centre, we offer a comprehensive 65 Point Vehicle Inspection Report with every full car service, available upon request. This includes checking your car’s filters to help you avoid costly repairs and keep your vehicle running smoothly.
